Best Firewood Moisture Meter: 5 Pin Meters for Seasoned Wood
Five pin-type moisture meters for firewood compared by wood range, species settings, display, power and warranty, so you know a split is under 20% before it goes in the stove.
Wet firewood burns cool, smokes and coats your chimney with creosote. A moisture meter tells you in seconds whether a split is under the roughly 20% that most stove makers and the EPA Burn Wise program point to. This guide compares five pin-type meters by wood range, species settings, display, power and warranty.

How we scored them
Each meter is scored out of 100 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, using only what the listing publishes. Meters carry no safety certification, so safety is zero for all of them and the warranty does more of the separating. The weights are on our How We Pick page.

Buying guide: choosing a firewood moisture meter
Pin or pinless?
Pin meters push two metal pins into the wood and read the resistance between them. They are inexpensive and good for firewood, where a couple of small holes do not matter. Pinless meters read through a pad and are better for finished floors and furniture. All five meters here are pin type.
How to get a true reading
The outside of a split dries first. Split a piece from the middle of the stack and push the pins into the fresh inside face, along the grain, at room temperature if you can. A reading taken on the bark or the end grain of a log can look drier than the wood really is.
Species settings
Dense hardwoods and light softwoods read differently at the same real moisture content. A meter with species scales lets you correct for that; without them, treat the reading as approximate and compare it with how the wood burns.
Range and display
For firewood you need roughly 10 to 40%; anything wider is a bonus for other jobs. A color-coded backlight makes it easy to sort wood quickly at the stack.
What the number means
Under about 20% is ready to burn. 20 to 25% is close; give it more time. Over 30% is green wood that needs at least another season. How fast wood gets there depends on species, split size and storage; our firewood species guide lists typical seasoning times, and a covered firewood rack speeds things up.
Turn a stack's length, height and depth into full and face cords, and estimate how much wood a winter takes.
Wood above about 20% moisture burns cooler and smokier and builds creosote in the chimney faster. Split a piece and measure the fresh face, not the weathered outside. See EPA Burn Wise. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What moisture content should firewood be?
About 20% or less. Wood in that range lights easily, burns hotter and makes less smoke and creosote.
Are cheap moisture meters accurate enough for firewood?
For deciding whether wood is ready to burn, yes. You need to tell 15% from 30%, not 18% from 19%. Take several readings from freshly split faces and average them.
Do I need species settings?
They help if you burn very dense woods like oak and hickory alongside lighter woods like pine. If you burn one or two species, a meter without them is fine.
Why does my wood read dry outside and wet inside?
The surface dries first. Always split a piece and read the fresh inside face.
Can I use the same meter for walls and floors?
Most of these meters have a building material mode for drywall and similar materials. For finished hardwood floors, a pinless meter avoids leaving holes.
