Buying guide: choosing a firewood rack with cover
Check capacity against log length
A full cord is 128 cu ft (4 x 4 x 8 ft). A face cord is one row, 4 ft high by 8 ft long, as deep as your logs, usually 16 in. A 4 ft rack 14 in deep holds roughly 18 cu ft of 16 in logs; the quarter-cord figure assumes 24 in logs. Measure your logs and do the math before you trust a label.
Top cover or full cover?
Green wood seasons fastest with the sides open to wind and sun, so a top cover that sheds rain and snow is the right choice while it dries. A full cover with a zipper is better for wood that is already seasoned and stored near the house. Either way, do not wrap a stack in plastic sheeting, which traps moisture.
Steel and finish
Thicker steel and a good powder coat resist bending and rust. Listings that state a gauge (16-gauge) or wall thickness tell you more than the word “heavy duty”.
Placement
Put the rack on level ground or pavers, in sun and wind if you are seasoning, and keep it away from the house wall to discourage insects and allow airflow. Check local fire codes for distance from structures.
Not sure how much space you need? The firewood cord calculator estimates cords per winter from your home and wood species, and species like oak need longer seasoning than ash.
Turn a stack's length, height and depth into full and face cords, and estimate how much wood a winter takes.
Stack firewood on stable, level ground, no higher than the rack is rated for, and keep large stacks away from the house to limit pests and fire risk. Store only a few days' worth indoors, away from the stove's clearance zone. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should firewood be covered?
Cover the top, leave the sides open while wood seasons. Rain on the top rows and snow sitting on the stack slow drying; open sides let wind carry moisture away.
How much firewood does a 4 ft rack hold?
With 16 in logs, about an eighth to a sixth of a cord. Quarter-cord claims assume 24 in logs.
How far off the ground should firewood be?
Several inches is enough to stop ground moisture wicking up and to let air move under the bottom row. All of these racks lift the wood off the ground.
Can I keep a firewood rack against the house?
Short-term storage near a door is common, but larger stacks are better kept away from the house to reduce insect and fire risk and to let air circulate. Follow local fire codes.
How long does firewood take to season on a rack?
Commonly six months to two years depending on species, split size and climate. Check with a moisture meter before burning; seasoned wood reads about 20% or below.
