Buying guide: an electric log splitter under $500

Tons: what 5 to 7 tons can split

At this price, splitters are rated 5 to 7 tons. That handles straight-grained, seasoned rounds up to about 10 in across. Green wood, knots, crotches and stringy species like elm need far more force. Our log splitter tonnage calculator estimates what your wood needs.

Log size limits

Check both numbers. A 20 in maximum length fits standard 16 in firewood with room to spare. The 10 in diameter limit is the one people hit: bigger rounds need quartering with a splitting maul first, or a gas splitter.

Cycle time

Cycle time is how long the ram takes to go out and back. 14 to 20 seconds is typical for electric splitters; gas splitters cycle in under 10. For a cord a year it hardly matters; for several cords it adds up.

Power and extension cords

These run on a standard 15 amp, 120V outlet. Use a short, heavy cord (12 gauge, 50 ft or less) or the motor runs hot and weak. Do not share the circuit with other big loads.

Height and controls

A stand that puts the beam near waist height saves your back. Two-hand controls keep both hands away from the wedge while the ram moves.

Log splitter safety

One operator only, with hands well clear of the wedge and the ram. Wear eye protection and gloves, set the splitter on stable, level ground, and keep kids and pets away from the work area. Run gas splitters outdoors only, and never reach in to clear a jammed log while the ram can move. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 7 ton electric log splitter enough?

For seasoned, straight-grained rounds up to about 10 in across, usually yes. For green hardwood, knots or rounds over 12 in, look at 20 ton and larger gas splitters.

Can an electric log splitter split oak?

Seasoned, straight oak rounds under about 10 in, yes. Large green oak with knots will stall a 5 to 7 ton splitter.

Can I use an electric log splitter indoors?

Electric splitters make no exhaust, so a garage or shed works. Keep the area dry, clear and well lit, and follow the manual.

What extension cord does a log splitter need?

A heavy cord, usually 12 gauge, no longer than 50 ft, plugged into its own 15 amp circuit. A thin or long cord starves the motor.

Electric or manual splitting?

For a few face cords of easy wood, a maul is fine. If splitting by hand hurts, or you split more than a cord, an electric splitter pays off quickly in time and effort.

See the log splitter hub and electric log splitters. Cut your rounds first with the best chainsaw for firewood or a chainsaw under $300, then store the splits on a covered firewood rack and check them with a firewood moisture meter. Still deciding?
