Best Stove Thermometer: 5 Wood Stove Thermometers Compared

Five wood stove thermometers compared by placement, temperature range, dial size, burn zones and warranty, from magnetic stove-top meters to a probe for double wall pipe.

Four wood stove thermometers shown as product cards with their Woodlot Scores: GALAFIRE GF-ST01 63, Midwest Hearth Stove Top 56, Midwest Hearth Probe 55, Hanaoyo Large Dial 52

A stove thermometer is the cheapest way to burn a wood stove well. It tells you when the stove is too cool, which builds creosote in the chimney, and when it is too hot, which can warp parts and damage a stove fan. This guide compares five thermometers by placement, temperature range, dial size, burn zones and warranty, including a probe for double wall pipe.

Buying guide: choosing a stove thermometer

Stove top, single wall pipe or double wall pipe

Magnetic surface thermometers work on the stove top and on single wall connector pipe. Double wall pipe keeps its outer wall cool, so a surface meter reads far too low; you need a probe that reaches the flue gas. Check which pipe you have before you buy.

Where to place it

Follow your stove manual. On the stove top, a spot partway between the center and the edge usually reflects the burn best; the edges and back read cooler. On single wall pipe, place it about 18 in above the stove collar. Move a magnetic meter until you find the spot that tracks the fire.

Reading the zones

Most dials show three zones. Below the best zone, the fire smolders and creosote builds in the chimney. Above it, you risk overfiring the stove. Stove-top readings and pipe readings are not the same, so learn what your stove reads in a good burn.

Range and dial

A range of 100 to 700F covers normal stove-top use; wider ranges just add room on the dial. A larger dial is easier to read from across the room. A probe reads flue gas, which runs much hotter than any surface.

Pair it with a fan and dry wood

A thermometer protects a heat-powered stove fan from running above its limit. It also shows the effect of wet wood right away: a stove that will not climb into the best zone is often burning wood that needs a firewood moisture meter check.

Wood stove safety

Install stoves and inserts to the manufacturer's instructions and your local code, usually by a certified installer with a permit and inspection. Keep the listed clearances to combustibles, run working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, have the chimney inspected and cleaned every year to prevent creosote fires, burn only seasoned wood, and check local burn rules. See EPA Burn Wise, NFPA heating safety, CPSC carbon monoxide guidance and the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature should a wood stove run at?

On most stove-top meters, the best zone sits roughly between 300 and 600F. Check your stove manual and your thermometer’s zones, since stoves and meters differ.

Where do you put a wood stove thermometer?

On the stove top partway between the center and the edge, or on single wall connector pipe about 18 in above the stove. Double wall pipe needs a probe thermometer.

Do magnetic stove thermometers work on double wall pipe?

No. The outer wall stays cool, so the reading is far too low. Use a probe thermometer made for double wall pipe.

How does a stove thermometer help with creosote?

Creosote builds fastest when the fire burns cool and smoky. A thermometer shows when the stove is below its best zone so you can add air or wood. Have the chimney inspected and swept by a CSIA-certified sweep at least once a year.

Do I need a stove thermometer if I have a stove fan?

Yes. Heat-powered fans have a maximum temperature, and a thermometer is how you stay under it.
