Best Vertical Log Splitter: 5 Horizontal/Vertical Gas Splitters
Five horizontal/vertical gas log splitters compared by rated tons, cycle time, log length, engine, towing and warranty, for splitting heavy rounds without lifting them onto the beam.
The heaviest part of splitting is lifting big rounds onto the beam. A horizontal/vertical splitter tips upright so you can roll a round onto the foot plate and split it where it sits. This guide compares five gas splitters that work in both positions, by rated tons, cycle time, log length, engine, towing and warranty.

Buying guide: choosing a vertical log splitter
Why vertical matters
A 20 in round of green oak can weigh well over 100 lb. In vertical mode you roll it onto the foot plate and lower the wedge onto it; no lifting. In horizontal mode, the same machine is faster for smaller pieces you can pick up easily.
Tonnage
Vertical splitters are usually 25 tons and up, because the wood they are bought for is big. 25 to 30 tons covers most hardwood rounds; 35 tons helps with large knotty or stringy wood such as elm. The log splitter tonnage calculator estimates what your wood needs.
Cycle time and two-way splitting
11 to 16 seconds is typical. A two-way splitter splits on both strokes, which raises output more than a slightly faster cycle does.
Towing
Most of these weigh around 450 to 550 lb and tow behind an ATV, UTV or truck with a 2 in ball. Check tire rating and maximum towing speed (45 mph here) and your local trailer rules.
Comfort and safety
Vertical splitting puts you closer to the wedge. Keep one operator only, hands away from the wedge and foot plate, and wear eye protection, gloves and steel-toe boots.
On a tighter budget, see the best gas log splitters under $2,000; for a cord or two of seasoned wood, an electric log splitter may be all you need.
Pick the wood species, the biggest round you split and its condition to get the splitter tonnage to shop for.
One operator only, with hands well clear of the wedge and the ram. Wear eye protection and gloves, set the splitter on stable, level ground, and keep kids and pets away from the work area. Run gas splitters outdoors only, and never reach in to clear a jammed log while the ram can move. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a vertical log splitter better than horizontal?
For heavy rounds, yes, because you do not lift them. For small and medium pieces, horizontal is faster. That is why most buyers choose a splitter that does both.
How heavy a log can a vertical splitter handle?
In vertical mode the round sits on the ground or foot plate, so weight matters far less than diameter, knots and tonnage. Horizontal limits are lower; Champion lists 100 lb.
How many tons do I need for big rounds?
25 to 30 tons for most hardwood rounds over 20 in; 35 tons for knotty or stringy wood.
Can I tow a log splitter on the highway?
These listings state a maximum of 45 mph. Check your state’s trailer rules for lights, chains and registration before towing on public roads.
Can I run a gas splitter in a barn?
No. Run gas splitters outdoors only; exhaust contains carbon monoxide.
