How we scored them

The Firewood Score weighs performance, build, value, safety listing and warranty. The Ergodyne leads on the strongest stated ratings with side shields; the 3M matches the dual rating with a dust gasket; the Pyramex is the only one with a stated warranty term. See our chainsaw safety gear checklist for the full kit.

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

How to choose the best safety glasses for chainsaw use under 15

Rating first

The Ergodyne and the 3M state ANSI Z87.1-2020 high impact plus CSA Z94.3; the two TICONN packs state ANSI Z87.1; the Pyramex states no rating. For chainsaw work, a stated impact rating is the first filter.

Anti-fog for real work

The Ergodyne, the 3M and the Pyramex state anti-fog; the TICONN packs do not. Sawing is sweaty work in a helmet, so a stated anti-fog coating matters more here than in the shop.

Pack size vs single pair

The TICONN 12-pack and 3-pack spread the cost across pairs; the other three are single pairs. Glasses get scratched and lost in the woods, so spares have real value. For more gear see our chainsaw gear guides.

Lens tint: clear against amber

Four of the five list clear lenses; the Pyramex lists an amber lens with H2X anti-fog. The 3M, the Pyramex and both TICONN packs state 100% visible light transmission; the Ergodyne states 91%. An amber lens cuts some transmitted light by design, which suits dim woods at first light, while clear suits full daylight. None of the listings gives a task recommendation, so match the tint to the light you cut in. Note the Pyramex color field reads I/O Mirror Anti-fog Lens with a black frame while the lens color is amber; the listing is not perfectly tidy. If you cut at dawn and midday with one pair, clear is the simpler single choice.

Foam gaskets and side shields

The 3M is the only pick with a removable foam gasket, stated to limit eye exposure to nuisance dust, with airflow vents in the gasket. The Ergodyne takes the other approach: integrated side shields that the listing says preserve peripheral vision while blocking the sides. The Pyramex and both TICONN packs state no gasket and no side shields. For chainsaw work, chips come from the side as well as the front, so a gasket or shield is worth more here than in the shop. The 3M gasket is removable, which means it can be cleaned; the Ergodyne shields are built into the full frame. If sawdust in the eyes is the complaint, these two are the short list.

Scratch resistance and cleaning

The Ergodyne states enhanced scratch resistance to EN166 and includes a microfiber cleaning bag, with care instructions to avoid harsh cleaning methods. The 3M states anti-scratch on select models, with care listed as mild soap and water and no harsh chemicals. Both TICONN packs state a scratch-resistant coating; the 12-pack says clean with a soft dry cloth, the 3-pack says soft cloth and mild soap. The Pyramex states no scratch claim and says to clean with a damp cloth. In the woods a scratched lens gets replaced, not polished, which is where the TICONN packs earn their place. Only the Ergodyne includes a bag.

UV protection numbers

Four listings state UV protection with numbers. The TICONN packs state UV400. The Ergodyne states the lens filters 99.9% of UVA, UVB and UVC. The 3M and Pyramex mark ultraviolet light protection as true without a number. UV400 and 99.9% UVA/UVB/UVC both describe full-range blocking in each listing’s own terms. For all-day outdoor cutting, a stated UV figure beats an unstated one. None of the listings states a lens darkness grade beyond the amber or clear color, so pair this section with the tint choice above.

Fit, weight and comfort

Stated fit types: the 3M is universal fit at 1.12 oz; the Pyramex is slim fit at 27.22 g; both TICONN packs are regular fit with silicone temple tips; the Ergodyne is regular fit with a contoured nose bridge and soft temple pads. The 3M adds foam temple tips for cushioning. Slim fit suits narrower faces, per the Pyramex listing; universal fit aims at everyone and fits no one perfectly. Weights are stated in three different units across the listings, ounces, grams and kilograms, which tells you the listings were written by different hands; compare within the same unit or not at all. Try the fit with the helmet or muffs on, since the temples have to sit under them.

Extras: ear plugs, readers and straps

The 3M packs the most extras: a corded ear plug control system in the temples, with ear plugs sold separately, and readers in +1.5, +2.0 and +2.5 diopters on select models. The Ergodyne is compatible with an elastic retainer strap sold separately and includes the microfiber bag. On warranty, only the Pyramex states a term: 90 days on material and workmanship. The 3M warranty reads As Labeled, the TICONN packs point to a warranty page with no term, and the Ergodyne text makes promises without a stated term. Extras do not replace a rating, but the ear plug control is genuinely useful when the saw is running.

Listing quirks worth knowing

These listings contradict themselves in small ways, and the conflicts sit in the fields you need. The Ergodyne spec table lists the lens type as Anti-Scratch and Enhanced Anti-Fog, Polarized, Mirrored, then lists polarization type as Non-Polarized a few rows later; both cannot be true, so read the lens as non-polarized and ignore the stray word. The 3M spec table says no data for the removable foam gasket and the cord control system while the bullets describe both in detail; the bullets win. The Pyramex title says amber H2X anti-fog while the color field says I/O Mirror anti-fog lens with a black frame; the lens color field says amber, so amber it is. The two TICONN packs share a model number and title but differ in frame: rimless on the 12-pack, full rim on the 3-pack. When the table and the bullets disagree, the bullets win.

Chainsaw safety

Wear cut-resistant chaps, a helmet with face screen and hearing protection, gloves and sturdy boots. Know where the kickback zone is (the upper tip of the bar), keep the chain brake working and the chain sharp, and never cut alone in the woods. Felling trees is hazardous work: hire a professional for large, leaning or storm-damaged trees, especially near buildings or power lines. See OSHA logging safety for chain saw operators.
