Best Chainsaw Sharpener: 5 File Kits and Grinders Compared

Five chainsaw sharpening options compared by type, chain pitch and file sizes, what is in the box, depth gauge tool and power, from simple file holders to a 120V electric grinder.

Four chainsaw sharpeners and file kits shown as product cards with their Woodlot Scores: Husqvarna file kit 58, Stihl 2-in-1 file holder 56, Hipa 12-piece set 53, Oregon 601981 kit 52

A sharp chain pulls itself into the wood and throws out chips; a dull one makes dust, forces you to push, and wears the saw and you out. Most firewood cutters sharpen with a file every tank or two. This guide compares five chainsaw sharpening options, four hand-filing kits and one electric grinder, by chain pitch, file sizes, what is in the box, depth gauge tool and power.

Buying guide: choosing a chainsaw sharpener

Match the file to the chain

The round file diameter has to match the chain pitch, or the file will not sit in the cutter. Typical pairings are 5/32 in (4.0 mm) for 1/4 in and 3/8 in low-profile chains, 3/16 in (4.8 mm) for .325 in chains, and 7/32 in (5.5 mm) for full-size 3/8 in and .404 in chains. Your manual, the bar, or a number stamped on the chain’s drive links gives the pitch and gauge.

File kit or electric grinder

A file takes off little steel, works in the field and costs less. A grinder is quicker once set up and repeats the same angle, but needs power and removes more steel if you press hard. Many homeowners start with a file kit and a guide.

Do not forget the depth gauges

The small hump in front of each cutter is the depth gauge, or depth limiter. If it stands too tall the cutter cannot bite; too low and the saw grabs. Check and lower them every few sharpenings with a flat file and a depth gauge tool, which several of these kits include.

How often to sharpen

Touch up the chain whenever it makes fine dust instead of chips, pulls to one side or needs pushing to cut. Hitting dirt or a rock dulls a chain at once. A chain filed little and often cuts better and lasts longer than one filed rarely.

Work safely

Switch the saw off, engage the chain brake and clamp the bar so it cannot move. Wear gloves and eye protection, and with an electric grinder unplug it before changing wheels. If a chain is badly damaged or the cutters are too short, replace it.

A sharp chain starts the job; the saw matters too. See the best chainsaw for firewood and plan your supply with the firewood cord calculator.

Chainsaw safety

Wear cut-resistant chaps, a helmet with face screen and hearing protection, gloves and sturdy boots. Know where the kickback zone is (the upper tip of the bar), keep the chain brake working and the chain sharp, and never cut alone in the woods. Felling trees is hazardous work: hire a professional for large, leaning or storm-damaged trees, especially near buildings or power lines. See OSHA logging safety for chain saw operators. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size file my chainsaw needs?

Find the chain pitch and gauge in your saw’s manual or stamped on the chain’s drive links, then match the round file diameter to the pitch. Common pairs are 5/32 in for 1/4 in and 3/8 in low-profile, 3/16 in for .325 in, and 7/32 in for full-size 3/8 in.

How often should I sharpen a chainsaw chain?

Whenever it makes dust instead of chips, pulls to one side or needs force to cut. Many people give it a few file strokes at each refuel.

Is an electric chainsaw sharpener better than a file?

It is faster and repeats the angle, but needs power and removes more steel. A file is cheaper, portable and gentler on the chain, and with a guide it is not hard to learn.

Do I need to file the depth gauges?

Yes, every few sharpenings. As the cutters get shorter, the depth gauges stand relatively taller and the chain stops biting until they are lowered.

When should I replace a chain instead of sharpening it?

When the cutters are worn down to the wear line, the teeth are cracked, or the chain has hit metal or stone and is damaged beyond a few strokes of the file.
