Buying guide: a battery chainsaw for home use

Voltage and battery size

Voltage tells you roughly how much power the motor can draw; amp-hours (Ah) tell you how long it runs. A 4.0Ah or larger battery is the practical minimum for bucking firewood. A second battery charging while you cut matters more than a few extra volts.

Bar length

A 16 in bar handles limbs and rounds up to about 14 in across. An 18 in bar reaches further but drains the battery faster in big wood.

Stick with a platform

Batteries are the expensive part. If you already own a brand’s mower, trimmer or blower, buying the saw on the same platform saves money and gives you spare batteries.

Safety features

Look for a chain brake and a low-kickback chain. Battery saws start instantly, so keep the safety switch habits of a gas saw: two hands on the saw, and chaps, eye and hearing protection, gloves and a helmet.

When gas still wins

If you cut several cords of hardwood a year or regularly buck rounds over 16 in, see the best chainsaw for firewood or a budget chainsaw under $300.

Chainsaw safety

Wear cut-resistant chaps, a helmet with face screen and hearing protection, gloves and sturdy boots. Know where the kickback zone is (the upper tip of the bar), keep the chain brake working and the chain sharp, and never cut alone in the woods. Felling trees is hazardous work: hire a professional for large, leaning or storm-damaged trees, especially near buildings or power lines. See OSHA logging safety for chain saw operators. Frequently Asked Questions

Is a battery chainsaw good enough for firewood?

For a cord or less of small to medium rounds, yes, especially with a 4.0Ah or larger battery and a spare. For several cords of big hardwood, a gas saw is faster.

How long does a chainsaw battery last per charge?

It depends on battery size and wood. Brands quote 130 to 200 cuts on small square stock; in 10 to 12 in hardwood rounds, expect far fewer.

What voltage battery chainsaw should I buy?

40V to 56V covers most homeowner work. 80V saws are closer to gas power. Platform and battery capacity matter as much as voltage.

Are battery chainsaws safer than gas?

They have the same kickback risk. They are quieter and lighter, but use the same protective gear and the chain brake.

Should I fell trees with a battery saw?

Leave large, leaning or storm-damaged trees to a professional, especially near buildings or power lines. We do not publish felling instructions.

See the chainsaw hub and battery chainsaws. Split your rounds with an electric log splitter or a splitting maul, and plan your supply with the firewood cord calculator. Our species guides cover common yard trees like maple and birch. Splitting what you cut? Compare gas vs electric log splitters.
