Fall is when the woodpile earns its keep. The stacks cut and split in spring sit out through the weather, and the cover thrown over them decides whether December’s wood lights easy or hisses. Canvas vs polyester firewood cover is the material question behind that choice: the old cotton workhorse against the modern coated fabric on nearly every cover sold today.

The quick answer

For most wood burners, polyester wins. Polyester Oxford covers list factory coatings that shed rain, and the fabric is light enough to pull on and off the stack without a fight. Canvas breathes better, which matters for wood that is still seasoning, but it is heavier and needs re-treatment to keep shedding water. Pick polyester for seasoned wood in wet weather; pick canvas for breathability if the upkeep does not bother you.

What canvas brings

It breathes

Canvas is woven cotton, and cotton fiber passes air and vapor. On a stack that is still drying, that breathability is the whole argument: moisture can leave the wood instead of sitting under the cover. Polyester covers answer this with built-in vents, but vent placement is fixed while canvas breathes across its whole surface.

It is heavy

Canvas weighs more than coated polyester, and it gets heavier when wet. A big canvas cover is a chore to drag over a tall stack before a storm, and an even bigger chore to fold and store in spring. If the woodpile is far from the house, that weight matters every time the cover comes on and off.

It needs upkeep

Canvas sheds water when treated, and the treatment wears off with sun and rain. Re-waxing or re-treating is part of owning a canvas cover, usually a seasonal job. Skip it and the canvas wets through, which is exactly what the cover is there to prevent.

What polyester Oxford brings

Water resistance built in

Every cover in this guide lists 600D Oxford fabric with a PU coating, and the VIVOHOME adds a PVC coating as well. The listings claim these coatings block rain, dust and moisture and resist cracking in heat and cold. Unlike canvas, the water resistance arrives from the factory instead of from a treatment you reapply. The trade-off is breathability, which is why two of the four list vents.

Light and easy to handle

The JJASMAMV lists 2 pounds and the IC ICLOVER lists 16 ounces. A light cover goes on fast when a storm is coming and comes off fast when you need an armload of wood. The VIVOHOME adds side handles and drawstrings, which help one person handle and cinch the cover down.

Hardware canvas rarely has

Zippers and buckles come standard on these polyester covers, with drawstrings and vents on some of them. The VIVOHOME has a zipper with hook loop tape, adjustable drawstrings and buckle straps plus air vents. The IC ICLOVER has a full-length double-through zipper with a rain cover over the zipper and two windproof buckles. The JJASMAMV pairs a zipper with adhesive closing strips and click and close buckles, plus downward-facing air vents. The AKEfit puts lengthened zippers on both sides with rust-proof metal heads, velcro, two buckles and a drawstring under a rain guard top. Canvas covers seldom offer any of this.

Material Breathability Water resistance Handling Upkeep
Canvas High across the whole surface Needs re-treatment Heavy, heavier when wet Seasonal re-waxing

Polyester covers in the listings

All four covers below are polyester-family fabrics, so they show what the polyester side of this comparison actually looks like on the shelf.

The VIVOHOME 6ft cover lists 24 inches deep by 72 inches wide by 42 inches high, sized for a 6ft rack. Its 600D Oxford carries dual PU and PVC coatings, and it closes with a zipper and hook loop tape, with adjustable side drawstrings and buckle straps to hold it through wind. Built-in air vents and side handles round out the listing. Rack not included.

The IC ICLOVER 40-inch hoop cover lists 24 inches deep by 40 inches wide by 41 inches high at 16 ounces, made to fit a 40 or 41 inch diameter log hoop and logs up to 24 inches long. Its 600D Oxford has a PU coating inside, a full-length double-through zipper with a rain cover above it, and two adjustable windproof buckles at the bottom. Cover only.

The JJASMAMV 5ft cover lists 22.8 inches deep by 60 inches wide by 42 inches high at 2 pounds, in 600D Oxford and polyester fiber with a PU coating. It closes with a zipper, adhesive closing strips and click and close buckles, and its downward-facing air vents are aimed at cutting condensation. The same cover also comes in 8ft, 6ft and 4ft sizes. Rack not included.

The AKEfit 24-inch hoop cover lists 24 inches deep by 24 inches wide by 25 inches high at 3.2 ounces, in 100 percent polyester 600D Oxford with a PU coating. Lengthened waterproof zippers run on both sides with rust-proof metal heads and velcro, the bottom has two adjustable buckles plus a drawstring, and a folding rainproof top guards the zipper. It fits logs up to 24 inches long. Cover only.

Canvas vs polyester firewood cover in practice

Match the material to the wood and the weather. Seasoned wood under open sky in a rainy climate wants polyester: the coatings shed water without upkeep, and the vents on the VIVOHOME and JJASMAMV keep air moving. Wood that is still seasoning wants either canvas or a well-vented polyester, because trapped moisture undoes the drying. Wind is a hardware question more than a material one: buckles, drawstrings and a snug fit matter more than the fabric, and every cover here lists at least two of the three. Whatever you pick, measure the rack first; hoop covers like the IC ICLOVER and AKEfit are sized to the hoop diameter, while rack covers like the VIVOHOME and JJASMAMV are sized to the rack length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lasts longer, canvas or polyester?

The listings for these polyester covers claim resistance to tearing, cracking and fading, with PU or PVC coatings doing the weather work. Canvas lasts when it is re-treated on schedule and stored dry; neglected canvas rots. Longevity is mostly a maintenance question either way.

Do polyester covers let firewood breathe?

Two of the four covers here list vents: air vents on the VIVOHOME and downward-facing vents on the JJASMAMV. Vents move some air, but they do not breathe like canvas. For wood that is still seasoning, leave the sides open or choose canvas.

Is canvas better for seasoning firewood?

Canvas breathes across its whole surface, which suits a stack that is still drying. A polyester cover with good vents works too, as long as air can move under it. Covering only the top and leaving the sides open is the standard approach while wood seasons.

What size cover do I need?

Measure the rack, not the woodpile. Hoop covers are sized to the hoop: the IC ICLOVER fits 40 and 41 inch hoops, the AKEfit fits a 24 inch hoop. Rack covers are sized to length: the VIVOHOME fits a 6ft rack, the JJASMAMV a 5ft rack with 8ft, 6ft and 4ft versions available. All four listings say the rack is not included.

Do these covers include the rack?

No. The VIVOHOME, IC ICLOVER, JJASMAMV and AKEfit listings all state cover only, rack not included. Buy or build the rack separately, then match the cover to its measurements.
