Firewood Calculators
Three free calculators for the sizing questions that come up before you buy firewood gear. They run in your browser, store nothing, and each page shows the formula, a worked example and the assumptions behind it, so you can check the math by hand.
What the calculators do
- Firewood Cord Calculator: enter a stack’s length, height and depth to get full cords and face cords, then estimate how many cords a heating season takes from your home size, climate zone, wood species and stove.
- Log Splitter Tonnage Calculator: choose the wood species, the biggest round you split and whether it is green, seasoned or knotty to get the splitter tonnage range to shop for.
- Wood Stove Size Calculator: enter the area to heat, ceiling height, insulation, climate zone and floor plan to get a heat output range and stove size class.
The values inside the calculators (heat per square foot by climate, splitting force per inch of diameter, stove efficiency) are planning figures drawn from common rules of thumb. Always confirm against the manual for the exact splitter or stove you buy, and use a certified installer for any stove.
The calculators use the heat and splitting figures from our firewood species table, which compares 23 common woods.
